Declared a Heritage Town for its beauty and cultural value, Mompox is one of the most authentic corners of Colombia. Walking through its streets transports visitors to the colonial past and to the magical universe of Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez. This city, so close to Macondo, evokes the atmosphere of One Hundred Years of Solitude. A place where reality and fiction merge, it offers spaces to explore and share. Its name comes from the indigenous chief Mompoj, of the Malibú people, and it has been known as Mompós since the 18th century.

How to Get to Mompox – By Air
Mompox is served by San Bernardo de Mompox Airport (MMP), located just a few minutes from the town center, allowing quick and convenient access to the city. Currently, the main air connection is from Medellín, operated by regional airlines such as SATENA, with direct flights from Olaya Herrera Airport (EOH).
The Medellín – Mompox flight has an approximate duration of 1 hour and 10 to 15 minutes, making this route the fastest and most efficient way to reach the destination. These flights generally operate on specific days of the week, so it is recommended to check availability and schedules in advance.
Additionally, Mompox can be accessed by air from other cities through connecting routes, mainly by first flying to Cartagena, Montería, or Bogotá, and then continuing the journey by land.
How to Get to Mompox – By Land
For land access from Cartagena to Mompox, the road journey takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, whether by intercity bus, door-to-door transportation service, or private vehicle. This is one of the most commonly used routes by both domestic and international tourists.
From Barranquilla or Santa Marta, travel time is similar, ranging between 5 and 6 hours, depending on the type of service and road conditions. From Medellín, the overland journey is longer, with an estimated duration of 10 to 12 hours, and may include connections in intermediate cities.
River Transport and Combined Routes
A traditional and very authentic way to reach Mompox is by combining land and river transportation. Many travelers first arrive in Magangué, an important port on the Magdalena River. From there, they take a river boat (chalupa or ferry) for an approximately 30 to 45-minute ride to the La Bodega area or nearby docks, followed by a short land transfer to the historic center of Mompox.

For this reason, it is recommended to carry cash, as not all establishments accept credit cards. The city is ideal for walking, enjoying a relaxed pace, and connecting with its history. IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Santa Cruz de Mompox is located in the department of Bolívar, in northern Colombia, on an island formed by the Mompox branch of the Magdalena River. It sits at approximately 16 meters above sea level, which explains its warm, humid, and tropical climate throughout the year.
Due to its climate conditions, visitors are advised to bring very light and breathable clothing, preferably made of cotton or linen, as well as a hat or cap, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Temperatures typically range between 28°C and 35°C (82°F to 95°F), with a high heat index, especially at midday. Comfortable footwear is also recommended, as many visits are conducted on foot through the historic center.
